    Eating Out In The Algarve

Eastern Algarve offers a wide range of restaurants providing excellent food ranging from the traditional Portuguese to the more cosmopolitan Steakhouses, Indian, Chinese and Italian. The traditional restaurants who normally offer a large selection of fish dishes, one of which is almost certain to be grilled sardines or if you like curries have a go at the very hot Chicken Piri-Piri.

Restaurant Infante One of our favourites

Steak on the stone.

There is also a Portuguese speciality where you cook your own steak. The stone is heated to extreme temperatures and you cut pieces off the joint, cook to your liking and thoroughly enjoy.

Prices in general are very reasonable, the food is good and the portions are generous. House wine, which is normally a local Portuguese wine, is also very good value and very drinkable! On average a 2-course meal for 2, including house wine, can cost less than €25. (Soup of the day €1.50, main course €7.00 and a bottle of house wine €8).

Or you can look out for the tourist menu which includes a 4 course meal and a half bottle of wine for less than 10 Euros. Fantastic value.

Obviously prices can vary enormously depending on location.

Pork and Prawn Spit

This is what you call a kebab

Couverts

'Couvert' is the traditional start to a meal and normally consists of fresh bread, olives, sardine paté, cheese and carrots that have been lightly cooked and marinated in garlic, olive oil and spices. These are brought to your table but if you do not want it and favour a more traditional starter just tell the waiter and he will take it back.

Couvert often costs as little as 1.50€ a person, but do check with the menu.

Main Courses

A lot of the main dishes in traditional Algarve restaurants are based around fish and seafood. The fish is normally simply prepared and served with salad and boiled potatoes or chips. You will find lots of types of fish to choose from, such as swordfish which I thoroughly recommend, tuna and various other types of fish. Be very careful if you order cod it may not be prepared the way that you might expect.

Drinks

Alcohol in general tends to be very reasonably priced in Eastern Algarve (in fact, probably considered cheap compared to most countries), with bottles of wine from as little as 1€ in the supermarkets! The prices of drinks in bars and restaurants can be very reasonable, a glass of wine €1 or €2, spirits (normally good sized measures) about €3 and small draft beers from €1 to €1.50. A pint of beer ( caneca ) for around €2.50 and I would also thoroughly recommend the local brandy “Maciera” . You can get a brandy & coffee for also around €2.50 a litre of Maciera will cost you €9, a must to bring home.
